Palmetto Island State Park is a recent addition to the Louisiana State Park system. The new state park is located south of Abbeville, Louisiana in Vermilion Parish. The state of Louisiana acquired the property for the park in 1981 but did not begin construction on it with the intent of public use until 2002. State budget constraints and other concerns delayed the park's opening until October, 28, 2010.The park, 1299acre in size, is noted for its abundance of palmettos,(mostly Dwarf Palmetto) which form a dense understory in the coastal bottomland hardwood forest that predominates here. Palmetto Island State Park has a visitor's center which houses a multi-purpose room that can rented for meetings, weddings and other social events. A water playground is located nearby. Guests may stay at one of six two-bedroom cabins nestled in the woods or use any of the park's 95 campsites. There are four picnic pavilions and strategically placed picnic sites for visitors. An aquatic pavilion overlooks the Vermilion River. Access to the Vermilion River is provided by a boat launch. Interior lagoons allow canoers and kayakers the opportunity to observe native animal and plant life. Including a new population of Iris nelsonii. A nature trail (of 0.75 miles) begins at the park's visitor center. The park address is 19501 Pleasant Road, Abbeville, LA 70510. • Large private RV sites which are level with gravel for your rig and a cement pad for the picnic table. Fire ring is set to the back and the water hook-up has great pressure. No issues with 30amp electricity & Verizon comes through with 3-4 bars. There's a 2 lane dump station near the entrance so no wait lines. There's also 2 laundry facilities; both clean, good working order and reasonably priced. The park has a lot to offer the family camper with a nature center, splash pad, two ponds and many pavilion picnic and fishing areas. We're enjoying the hard packed gravel nature paths and long bike rides on the paved roads. We were told the canoe run is riddled with logs right now so we skipped it but I bet this place is booming in the summer!
  • Clean, manicured park. Very interesting flora and fauna. Loved the palms. We're from the Midwest, so there were a lot of different things to see. Avery Island is beautiful. The trees! Lots of old, gnarled, moss laden trees on Avery and throughout the area. Darn....we did not see even one alligator !
  • Beautiful campground with an amazing splash pad. This place is a gem! They even have showers and a laundromat! The nature trails are very well kept. The landscape scenery is beautiful. Can't wait to come back amd camp when it cools off outside and kayak.
  • 2nd time to this State Park. Love the Jurasic Park look of the Cypress trees with the thickly grown in Palmetto trees/bushes. Fire pits & pinic tables included with all the RV sites. Highly recommend. VERY REASONABLY priced as well for overnight RV stays.
  • Palms everywhere. Nice hiking trails. They have tons of amenities during peak, including a splash park, paddling, and cabins.
