Take a walk across Land Bridge to Bar Island, exposed only during low tide. The uninhabited tidal island, part of a national park, becomes accessible to walkers and bikers for about three hours each day when the gravel harbor seafloor is exposed. The "bar" connects the island to the town on the mainland during this short period. Once on the island, you can explore a network of trails and several scenic overlooks providing views of the town across the water. To avoid being unable to cross back to the mainland once the water rises, be sure to time your hike with low tide. Check online for a chart providing exact low tide times for this area. • This is a great thing to do. It's so cool to see and if you walk across to the island there is a nice trail and a house that was there but burned down years and years ago. If you do go over there make sure you know when low ride and high tide is. You don't know when the tide starts to come in find out. Because if you get stuck over at the island that will be the most expensive 1/2 mile boat ride you will ever have, don't believe me just ask around. But if you stay on the walk way it's always fun to skip rocks and watch the sunset.
  • Definitely a tourist spot. Save your legs and don’t take the hike to the top as the trees block any good view of the harbor. Nice to watch the tide fall to expose the bar. It’s rocky so I’d recommend hiking boots or tennis shoes although lots of people in flip flops.
  • Fun place! My suggestion is bring water sandals to cross. Lots of people wore regularly sneakers, hiking shoes, or flip flops. We all had close toed sandals easy to walk and hike in. Also, if you want to optimize your time on the island you can cross earlier. People with sneakers on had to wait or take them off. Overall, cool experience. On another note I noticed people comments on when to cross. The times change as do low and high tide times each day. Low tide is not at the same time each day. Our hotel knew the times and when to cross.
  • This is a very short hike, it's mostly a pre-dinner walk. But it is gorgeous. You can do it only during the low tide, so 6 - 8pm it's a perfect time to enjoy sunset during the summer
  • Amazing place. No sea life during low tide except mussels and snails, but it’s great, especially during sunrise or sunset. Make sure to read the tide tables before you go and go during low tide.
