Jefferson Davis, the only Confederate president, spent the last 12 years of his life at Beauvoir. Davis retired to the plantation estate following the Union's victory in the Civil War. Explore the home and grounds on your own, or take a guided tour. The 20.6 hectare (51 acre) site includes a Civil War museum, Davis's library, and a confederate cemetery, which contains the Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier. The property suffered significant damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but continues to be a worthwhile stop. Davis's former home appears on the National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
