Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Hatteras Island

If you're looking for something else to do on the islands besides just chill on the beach with a cooler beer the nearby lighthouses are one of the go-to events. We ended up visiting three lighthouses in the area and enjoyed learning about the history of the islands, the origin of the lighthouses in the area, and how they serve to help protect the maritime traffic in the area over the years. It's also interesting to read about how the islands change and how the lighthouses need to move in order to continue to protect the coastline.

This is *the* lighthouse I'd seen in pictures everywhere. Let me be clear: it is still just a lighthouse. Don't go expecting some amusement-park level entertainment. But if you're a fan of museums and a brisk walk, it's a great stop. The walk to the top was still closed (and, as far as I could tell, had been for awhile and would be for quite some time more), but I enjoyed the museum info about WWI and WWII interactions with German submarines and the moving of the lighthouse. The park rangers were present, attentive, helpful, and did a good job of entertaining people with brief activities.

The crown jewel of the Outer Banks lighthouses. Located just inland after the incredible move in 1999. The tree line which was cut is still visible and gives a great view of the original location. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse remains the most popular and tallest lighthouse in the US standing at 208 ft!y

I have loved going to the lighthouse since I was a little kid. It is currently closed for renovations so do not go expecting to climb up it right now. It is still nice to go see and walk around. It's also nice to look through the museum in the old lighthouse keepers station across the way from the lighthouse. Make sure you take some time to learn about the wildlife (maybe see some of you're lucky) and learn about some ocean safety if you plan on swimming while you're on the island. Rip currents are real ... be safe!

Great place to stop as it is free. The lighthouse is closed for walking up and that was the only thing costing money. It is huge. One building is still open for walk through and has a lot of historical info and exhibits. Just bring a mask as this is a federal site and does not go maskfree as state law does. There are bathrooms, AEDs for health scares, and a gift shop. We bought a cute Christmas ornament for like $9. Would visit again as it is a great place to stretch the legs.
