Create an itinerary including Raccoon Mountain Caverns
Go on an underground journey through Raccoon Mountain Caverns, one of Tennessee’s greatest natural wonders. Two types of tours are available. The Crystal Palace Tour is a guided walk through lighted pathways in the front area of the cave. The guide will explain the history of the cave as you admire the geological formations. For the more daring, the Wild Cave Expedition takes you deep inside the undeveloped portions of the cave--without trails, handrails, or electric lights. Trained guides will lead you through chambers, tunnels, streams, and waterfalls, and you'll have the option of staying overnight in the cave. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment, including helmets and lights. Wild Cave Expedition tours need to be booked in advance, but reservations are not necessary for the Crystal Palace option. The temperature inside the cave is consistently around 15 C (60 F), so make sure to dress appropriately. To visit Raccoon Mountain Caverns on your trip to Chattanooga, use our Chattanooga visit site.

  • The caves are great. We had Eric as a tour guide and you can tell he loves the caves and his job. He took his time and knew a lot about the different formations and how they are formed.

  • We had an amazing experience today during the hour tour with Christmas lights and decorations. We called to reserve and were able to join the next group. Cory was our tour guide and he shared amazing scientific background and history about the cave. He got us very excited about going back for the 2 hour wild cave tour. My 8 year old son, who was not very attracted to science, is now super motivated about learning geology and science in general. We are definitely going back. I highly recommend this cave.
  • While I was staying in Chattanooga I decided to take the 20 minute drive out to Raccoon mountain to tour the caves. While you can’t make a reservation online for a tour (and you can’t tour them on your own) I was able to join the next tour. I recommend calling to make a reservation as they do not have consistent tours. Zachary was our tour guide and he did an amazing job sharing the science behind the cave and all the different formations. I grew up going to a lot of caves around the US and this one rivals many of the better known caves. The owners have done a wonderful job preserving the natural beauty of this cave and we had the opportunity to see all kinds of cave creatures including some bright yellow and orange salamanders. I just did the 1 hour walking tour but they also have some cave crawling experiences that looked like a lot of fun. Highly recommend!
  • This was so much fun. I generally only have one day where I can visit my wife, and she planned a cavern exploration while I was here in town! The place has a great vibe. The cavern is huge and the guides know a ton of cool information. Highly recommend, and they also have a dirt panning experience if you're so inclined. A ton of fun for kid and adult alike :)
  • It was good. We have one more night to go. Cute little cabin. Only negatives I found were that they gave us firewood that was too wet and that the neighbors dog wouldn't stop barking most of the time we were here (not their fault) I have 2 dogs as well and they were not barking. Little bark park is cute. Caverns were cool and Ben was a good tour guide.
  • The hardest hike I had ever been on. It was definitely challenging. Coming down is no easier than going up. It would be nice if there were more labels. We went looking for the waterfall in one of the pictures but there was no direction to get there on the hiking ground. The paths weren't super clear. There was some guys work to get to the top. Luckily some people left rope behind to help people up once the path became steep. The views were fantastic.
