DeSoto Caverns is a series of caves and a tourist attraction located in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it is touted as "Alabama's Big Cave". In addition to the caves, the park offers various other attractions, including a three-quarter acre maze known as the Lost Trail Maze, panning for gemstones, a climbing wall, and amusement park style rides. While on the caverns tour, visitors can view a sound, light, and water show that changes with the holidays and seasons.Using our online itinerary creator, Childersburg attractions like Majestic Caverns can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
Before being commercialized as DeSoto Caverns, the cave was well known locally as Kymulga Cave. There is evidence that the cave was formerly used by Native Americans, and it was mined during the Civil War.
The main room of the cave is twelve stories high and larger than a football field. The entrance has been enlarged from an earlier period when it was a 4ft by 8ft hole in the side of a hill.
It was thought at one time that the cave system was very large, extending from near Childersburg to Talladega, Alabama. However, explorations have revealed only one place where the cave continues for any distance beyond the main room. At the left end of the rear wall of the main room, the cave continues some two or three hundred yards, ending at a blank wall and a small pool of water. With the possible exception of an underwater exit through this pool, there are no other known unexplored routes in the cave.
The caverns are noted for one of the largest continuing accumulations of onyx-marble stalagmites and stalactites in the world. DeSoto Caverns has actively growing rock formations (speleothems). For this reason, guests are not permitted to touch most of the rock formations.

This park is overpriced, especially for seniors visiting alone. The only thing that I was interested in was the Cavern Tour. I should not have had to pay for “inclusive” when the rest of the park...

This review is relative to camping only. Someone needs to send a search party for Tammy. I left her two voicemails over the last 6 days and never heard from her. I had questions about the camping...

I think we were there at an unpopular time, because we seemed to have the whole place practically to ourselves - and it was AWESOME! None of us had ever been there before, and we enjoyed every bit of it. The staff was delightful, and it was obvious that they all loved working there. The caverns were beautiful, but what really made it fun was the tour guides. They were funny and informative, and the history of the place is really cool. And then there were all the activities! So much fun. You know it's a good day when the kids are too tired to walk back to the car. A few pro-tips - don't do the foam pit until last, because you'll get totally soaked. Wear sturdy walking shoes in the cavern. Bring some extra cash for the gift shop, because it's awesome! Wear glasses or goggles in the cannon shooting gallery! Plan to do EVERYTHING!

Great visit here today. We really enjoyed the cavern tour. Great new lazer show during the tour. The group was a little big in our opinion but the guide did well managing it. I think a smaller group would have made for a much better time. But it is a great time if your in the area.

Family 4 went today! It was a cold day so not everything was opened. We did everything we could. Cute little place for the family to enjoy. With that being said, I think it is a bit overpriced with everything not opened. Maybe consider a "winter" deal. My 5 and 3 year enjoyed it. We love finding caves and LOVED the laser show after the tour. It was majestic! We will be back and hope to camp out next time.

we drove up today from the Columbus Ga Area.. about 2 hrs. let me say, I'm giving only 3 stars, but it may not be reflective of the location. I'll get to it. so.. overall, the Caverns park was clean, friendly and family friendly. it's attached to a campground I can't really comment on. it did look fairly nice from a distance. it's only getting three stars because it seemed most all the activities were targeting younger kids. ages 5/6 to maybe 12/13. not terribly exciting activities for slightly older kids. the prices for each activity, seemed a bit high, but I'm not sure how to lower them much and still make $$. a fine line there. We really did enjoy the cavern tour itself. it was a cool experience, and educational with some of the history associated with it. End thoughts.. if you are passing through the area, if you have young kids, or maybe grandkids, it might be worth the visit. if you have older kids, it's not really worth the stop, and not really worth driving more than an hour for. Again, not a bad place, but not worth the cost + traveling to, just for the cavern park. maybe if you're camping?

We found this cave by stopping at the Welcome Center or as we named them Adventure Centers. This tour was simply amazing! The whole park has a lot of different things to do while you wait for your tour time. The cave is very well lit and there are handrails all the way through. The Lazer show at the end is spectacular!
