Walk the route of the battle of Lexington and Concord, the opening battle in the Revolutionary War, when you visit Minute Man National Historical Park. Walk along Concord's North Bridge, where militiamen fired back at British troops for the first time, known as "the shot heard round the world." Look at the Minute Man Statue of 1875 and the Obelisk Monument, believed to be the country’s first memorial to casualties of war. You can walk the 8 km (5 mi) Battle Road Trail between Lexington and Concord, where British troops and Colonial militia fought, and see a monument at the site where Paul Revere was captured during his famed midnight ride. Visit Hartwell Tavern, a restored 18th-century inn, for history programs that are presented during certain months. The park also holds The Wayside, a home where the famous authors Amos Bronson Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Sidney once lived. Amazing place for a quick getaway from Boston, quite a lot of history involved in this place. During the winters the lake freezes making it fun to walk over it. It has free parking from morning till sun down.
