The three story red-brick home was built in 1867 for Congressman & C & O Canal president Josiah H. Gordon. Elizabeth (Humbird) Roberts later purchased the mansion for her husband and family, who would go on to live at 218 Washington St and thereabouts for years.Take a look at our Cumberland online travel route planner to schedule your visit to Gordon-Roberts House and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.
In 1954, the mansion was sold by a Roberts relation to The Allegany County Historical Society to be used in the "preservation of local history." Over the years the house was called The Roberts-Millholland House and then became known as "History House". Eventually the mansion was renamed The Gordon-Roberts House for the respective families who resided within and today operates as an historic house museum where guests of all ages experience what living in the late 1800's in The Queen City was like.
In addition, the museum is a perfect spot for weddings, showers and private celebrations. The Gordon-Roberts House remains the headquarters of The Allegany County Historical Society, today a non-profit organization working to promote history and education through special programs, unique trunk shows and field trips tailored to students and educators needs.
The ACHS enjoys working relationships with public, private and homeschool groups in Allegany, Bedford and Mineral County. The house that was once known as History House has become just that- the house where history lives. Stop by and see!
*Occasionally, the Gordon-Roberts House holds private events during which the museum is closed the public.

On a very rainy day, our docent, Eve, provided a very detailed tour of the Gordon-Roberts House. While most of the furnishings were not original to the house, they were representative of the time...

Such a beautiful home and furnished perfectly to replicate the Victorian Era. Would be a perfect venue for parties and events as well.

I had a few wonderful experiences here a couple of years ago, thanks to Brittney - the woman who created their web presence. I do not think she works over there anymore, but i still give it five stars because i live across the street. This is a gorgeous front yard. I met the gardener when i was visiting Brittany and we ended up on a mission where i got to wear a vintage glove while i rescued a baby bunny. It was in a hole and i was the random petite woman who happened to be walking by at the time. If the glove fits....

I have been here twice now and truly enjoy the tour every time. The volunteers are very knowledgeable of the history of the house and also know a great deal about Cumberland during those historic times. The house is in excellent condition and always so pretty. We have been there in the summer and also at Christmas and I would have to say that the house is so beautiful when it is decorated for Christmas. It is always so interesting to hear how Cumberland was the "Queen City" and that it was the second largest city in Maryland, only smaller to Baltimore. I am a huge history buff and always want to know more about the house and always have questions and they are always answered by the volunteers. I would highly recommend going at least once when you will have time to truly look at everything possible. Not really sure what it would take to give a 5-star rating but is excellent.

The staff was super friendly and awesome in telling stories and historical aspects of the house, the families, and the community. Lindsay did a phenomenal job. Thanks again.
