Indian Mound Park, also known as Shell Mound Park or Indian Shell Mound Park, is a park and bird refuge located on the northern shore of Dauphin Island, a barrier island of Mobile County, Alabama in the United States. In addition to the many birds which visit, a wide variety of botanical species contribute to the natural offerings. The site is historically significant due to the presence of prehistoric Indian shell middens, mounds composed of discarded oyster shells. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 14, 1973. It is administered by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
The shell middens located at Indian Mound Park date to the Mississippian period (1100 to 1550). The mounds were visited throughout this period by Native Americans of the Pensacola culture, who harvested oysters and fished in Little Dauphin Island Sound, an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico. Archaeologist Gregory Waselkov of the University of South Alabama believes that the visitors to the island came from Bottle Creek, the largest Mississippian settlement in the area. Waselkov theorizes that Bottle Creek, located on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, served as the major village while Dauphin Island acted as a migration destination during the winter months. This place was the reason we were there. It was not over crowded and everyone in there was super friendly. We definitely plan a return trip next migration.

I imagine in normal circumstances this would be a good excursion. Too much debris and bugs today to really explore

This is is lovely park. It is free to park here. They have such nice trails for hiking and just walking. They have pretty trees and flowers. There are lots of lovely birds and butterflies and turtles in pond area. Lots of people were taking pictures of so many of God's lovely creatures here.

Cute small park, the mounds are worn down (not very tall anymore). Many trails, most of them overgrown. Lots of park benches some of them overgrown. This place needs a loving touch of some volunteer workers. Huge, old live oaks. Parking is free, dogs allowed on a leash.

Shell Mounds Park is a quiet place to get away for some nature. Whether you're visiting the island or just want some peace away from the city, here's the spot! Trails crisscross this historically significant site, and there are benches to enjoy. Take a load off, have a picnic, or just watch the birds in the trees.

Very small park. Only a few sign boards with information. 5 car parking lot. One neighboring house was playing very loud music. Took about 5 minutes on a .3 mile trail. Lots of benches for such a short trail. Glad I saw it, great history, needs a little love.

Enjoyed walking the trails. Nothing is marked on path, but it's a nice walk around. There are benches located throughout trails.
