Experience early 20th-century luxury and a collection of artifacts at Glensheen - The Historic Congdon Estate. The house was completed in 1908 as the home of successful lawyer and investor Chester Congdon and his wife, Clara. The 39-room mansion and the surrounding 2.8 ha (7 acre) estate is now owned by the University of Minnesota-Duluth. You can tour the gardens and the interior, which is adorned with mahogany, silk, and gold leaf. Much of the furniture, decorations, and other items are the original pieces that were brought into the house in 1908. Tours are conducted frequently, so you won't have to wait long for one, and you can also purchase the tickets online. Quickly create a custom-made itinerary for Duluth using our trip planner.

  • Beautiful home and grounds. Very enjoyable home to walk through. The grounds are beautiful. I’d definitely recommend a self-guided tour, or a tour of any kind to the mansion.

  • Always a wonderful time! This time I got to share the property with my children. Even though their noses are usually stuck in a computer, they loved seeing all the different sorts of rooms and imagining which one would have been theirs. My treat this time was being able to visit the 3rd and attic floors. They gave great insight to the "behind the scenes" part of the home.
  • This place is amazing. The woodwork throughout this entire mansion is only to be seen in person. I'd have to say my favorite wow factor, " THE SHOWERS" The advanced system they had way back then is crazy. I would so so love to have just their shower in my place and I'd be a happy camper. Lol. Definitely a gotta stop place for your vacation.
  • Have been here a few times and it was beautiful in winter. They had the house all decorated for Christmas and we got to explore floors that hadn't previously been included in the tour. Was a great experience - beautiful adornments, great views of the lake. Will definitely be back!
  • Other visitors were a distraction today. One person had downloaded your app and was playing it at full volume as she walked into each room. Please suggest that app users wear headphones or turn off their speaker. There was also a large group of teenagers who's were more interested in each other than the interior of Glensheen. Spacing of large groups into smaller groups of 5 - 10 would help. The house was beautiful!
  • I would definitely recommend this place for your tourist destination, especially the Christmas tour. The mansion was beautifully decorated with over 25-Christmas trees and it got our family in the holiday mood. We came early on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds and got a personalized self tour taking our time. Glensheen also has a huge amount of local history and the staff is very knowledgable about all things Glensheen I would also recommend going during daylight hours, as the natural sunlight helps to see all the details throughout the mansion. Family friendly, but don't touch anything inside. Our son was an active military member so admission was free for all of us.
