Ambler's Texaco Gas Station, also known as Becker's Marathon Gas Station, is a historic filling station located at the intersection of Old U.S. Route 66 and Illinois Route 17 in the village of Dwight, Illinois, United States. The station has been identified as the longest operating gas station along Route 66; it dispensed fuel for 66 continuous years until 1999. The station is a good example of a domestic style gas station and derives its most common names from ownership stints by two different men. North of the station is an extant outbuilding that once operated as a commercial icehouse. Ambler's was the subject of major restoration work from 2005 - 2007, and reopened as a Route 66 visitor's center in May 2007. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
Located at the intersection of U.S. Route 66 and Illinois Route 17 in Dwight, Illinois, United States, Ambler's Texaco Station was built in 1933 by Jack Schore on property originally owned by Otto Strufe. The gas station is no longer in operation as a filling station, but when it closed, it held the record as the longest operating gas station along the historic Route 66. The station last dispensed gasoline in 1999. In 1936, the station was leased to Vernon Von Qualen and became known as Vernon's Texaco Station. Over the next two years, Von Qualen purchased the station from Schore, and sold it in 1938 to Basil "Tubby" Ambler. Ambler owned the station from 1938 - 1966. Ambler's ownership was the longest of any owner during the most historically significant period; as a result, the station was known as Ambler's longer than by any other name. • This is a beautifully restored gas station that is now a travel center. Unfortunately it was closed when we were there. Loved taking pictures of the restoration.

  • This was a really good Rte 66 history stop! We were greeted by a friendly volunteer, who is retired and now spends some time here. One wall proudly displays maps from all over the world where visitors add a push pin to their country, state and/ or city. It is interesting to see where people traveled from to tour Rte 66! There are also helpful brochures that provide you with information about wonderful stops you can make on the trip. This was worthwhile.
  • This restored gas station is a good spot to visit for photographing, it even has a cute little place to eat lunch outside. However, if you happen to be there to catch the owner, you get an opportunity to meet a very nice gentleman who gives you the history and opportunity to walk through the door to another time. AND maybe pick up a really cool vintage gas station shirt. 😃 (Don't forget to donate!)
  • Another fun Route 66 stop. They have local volunteers that can answer questions. Lots of Route 66 bling. Definitely worth a stop.
  • The Gas Station was closed when we got here but within minutes a gentleman came and opened up for us so we could do a quick tour and buy some souvenirs. Great set up and very well maintained.
  • Another great stop on Illinois Route 66, Red Carpet Corridor weekend. The gentlemen in the service station were more than accommodating in answering question and the lady in the gift shop was more than helpful! Definitely recommended stopping when you're in the area, especially when they are open! Some great photo opportunities at this stop as well!
