Gloucester Fisherman's Memorial is a historic memorial cenotaph sculpture on South Stacy Boulevard, near entrance of Stacy Esplanade in Gloucester, Massachusetts, built in 1925.DescriptionIt is an 8ft, bronze statue of a fisherman dressed in oilskins standing braced at the wheel on the sloping deck of his ship. The monument has a square base of sea green granite. It is positioned so that the fisherman is looking out over Gloucester Harbor. The fisherman in the sculpture was modeled after Capt. Clayton Morrissey, a prominent Gloucester fisherman, once the captain of the Effie M. Morrissey. The stone was purposely sculpted with a rough finish to make the fisherman look rugged. Craske posed the fisherman to look as if he was facing a windstorm and was headed toward dangerous rocks. His eyes are fixed on the water and sails, while every muscle is strained to hold the wheel with a firm grip. A small plaque on the north or street-facing side of the base reads, "Memorial To The Gloucester Fisherman, August 23, 1923". A larger recessed panel on the front or harbor-facing side of the base holds an inscription of bronze letters taken from the Bible's, which reads: "They That Go Down To The Sea In Ships 1623-1923".HistoryThe English sculptor Leonard Craske (1882–1950) designed the sculpture, and it was cast by the Gorham Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1925. • Cold, windy day but still a nice day to reflect on those lost at sea. The monument is located next to a busy street but there is plenty of walk space and paths to Stage Fort Park And Beach.

  • Parents lived here 67 yrs ago. They took a picture in front of the monument and we recreated it 67 years later😀. My Father has since past but this pic brought a tear to my 87 year old mothers eye.❤️

  • Living in NH, I generally go to the coast closer to home. As beautiful as it is, I loved the Gloucester area. I had to go for work showing houses and decided to follow the scenic route to check it out. There was early Christmas festivities going in here and there. Such a wonderful time if year there. We can't wait to go back in warmer weather with our cobra sports car!
  • Always stop here on my trips back home. Weekends tend to be crowded and if the weather is warm as well. Excellent harbor trail to walk but the best place is the park down the street.
  • While passing through,we saw the memorial. So,we made a brief visit to see it and the harbor. Nice memorial which honors all of those in fishing industry who died by sea.
  • Was shocked how beautiful this area was! Gloucester is a beautiful place in general full of history. A lot of thing within walking distance of this memorial include stores, beaches, restaurants, sea shells, or just a relax day looking out to the ocean.
  • We were traveling down the East Coast had to see Gloucester. Unfortunately we didn't get to spend too much time I'm hoping that I can come back someday. It's amazing how history and sacrifices that town has had.
