  • Try to get there early and enjoy about a one mile walk thru the park and see the devastation left over from erupting volcanoes. There is just so much to see, so get your cameras ready. Pictures...

  • Beautiful walk in the dark to check out the lava flows from Kilauea Volcano. Worth the mile or so hike to see stars brighter than you've seen them, vegetation against the night sky, and of course the lava. Make a trip up, enter the National Park, and enjoy it. Didn't get to see it during the day but the night was amazing!!
  • This is an easy 1.2 mile walk each way. We went during the day & then again just after dark. The view is absolutely amazing! Be prepared with a jacket or raincoat because the weather can change quickly. There is a bathroom & porta potties at the parking lot but no running water.
  • Very interesting. In August of 2022, the caldera was visible only if you walk about a mile along a closed road and stand on a small pen with 100 to 200 other people. I understand about ten years ago the main road collapsed into the caldera, I don't understand why the road hasn't been moved to allow for handicap ability and more open viewing? No good explanation was given.
  • Awesome trail to take to get to the centre of Kilauea Iki Crater and onto Thurston Lava Tube. I then walked from the lava tube back to the car park on the road. About 8k in all. Worth taking the side trip to see Kilauea erupting (closed to cars at time of writing, but about a 3.2k return walk).
  • Great trail for viewing lava & the scenic volcanic landscape. Highly recommend going to see the lava & checking with park rangers at visitor center for updated information on its conditions & where to view it. If you park in the overflow parking (Pu’upua’i lot) for lava viewing you can walk through a trail with a barren desert-like volcanic landscape with some forest areas - Devastation Trail (be prepared - it gets pretty dark at night if no one else is around). This trail then links to the regular parking lot which takes you to the lava viewing via a paved road.
