City Point was a port on the James River. During the last years of the American Civil War, from the port there, the City Point Railroad was used to support the Union forces during the Siege of Petersburg 1864–65. The successful capture of Petersburg and its network of railroads was the key to the fall of the Confederate capital city of Richmond, ending the war less than a week later.

  • I love the history of civil war. I enjoyed that place. Is interesting that General Grant lived in the simple cabin for a couple years and that was important for the final result of the Civil War.

  • Not sure if this landmark is open to the public right now, but we went there on a rainy day and there was construction going on in the main house. They left us alone to wander the beautiful grounds and beach areas. The information stations were very informative regarding the area during the Civil War Era and displayed pictures of what the area looked like at the time. The stations were placed exactly in the area that the pictures displayed from back in time. My son and I spent about 1 1/2 hours discovering the place and discussing what it must have been like. The pathways where carriages drove through are still visible and the paths to the beach area are very well kept. We had a marvelous experience here!
  • We couldn't enter Grant's Headquarters as it is still closed due to COVID. Lawns and grounds were well kept, but that's all we could see.
  • Although the house was closed during our visit, the grounds are beautiful. Two rangers gave us a brief presentation of the history. The property's history extends to prior to the Revolutionary War. Highly recommend visiting.
  • Beautiful historic home to visit. Picnic tables and fishing. We just walked the property. Peaceful and relaxing!
  • Loved the walk on the grounds and seeing the buildings, flowering trees and river.
