Hike down into dramatic Waipio Valley to see the tallest waterfalls on the island plunging from steep cliffs, a black sand beach, and fields of taro. The valley measures 1.6 km (1 mi) across and 8 km (5 mi) long and the cliffs, and mountains on either side plunge down 600 m (2000 ft). Check out Hiilawe Falls, which drop 400 m (1,300 ft) at the back of the valley. When you reach the beach, you can cross the river that bisects it if the tide is out. Pack a light lunch, wear comfortable clothes and hiking shoes, and bring sunscreen and a hat to make the long, steep hike down from the top of the valley easier. If you choose to drive down, make sure it’s in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, given the bumpy road. To find out how to plan a trip to Kukuihaele, use our trip itinerary maker.

Suitable place to see the beauty of nature. There you can relax, enjoy the view and feel fresh ocean air. There are small picnic area and restrooms.

Incredibly beautiful scenery. Road is closed to non-residents and you need a 4x4 to get to the beach. Glad I am a resident and I own a 4x4 because the beach is totally worth it. The river is really one only 2-3 feet deep max the entire way and you can walk, paddle board, or kayak almost the whole way to the waterfall at the end.

It was an awesome trip to this destination. but unfortunately road closed to hiking. so you’re not be able to hike down to the beach, unless you’re living down there.

Absolutely worth the drive from the Kona Coast. You are only able to go-to the look out the road down to the black sand beach is closed. There are a few little fruit stands along the way that serve amazing fruit. Check the weather before you make the drive It's very different on that side of the island We were fortunate that the clouds cleared just in time for us to see it.

This is is a spectacular valley with steep cliffs on the North Shore. You can walk down a steep road or hire a trip with a local 4WDer. Otherwise you still can have a great view.

The people complaining about how tough the hike is need to exercise more. It is steep, but in no way “treacherous”. On a hot day, you will sweat buckets. Bring water and good walking shoes and take your time and you will be fine. If you don’t want to walk, you could rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle to drive down, and if that’s too much for you, a shuttle takes people down and up, although I’m not sure how much it is. Basically, you shouldn’t rate a hike poorly because of your lack of preparation. Prepare for a challenging hike and you will be surprised how doable it is. Some nice people even offer others rides up or down.
