You'll be treated to views of lush green plants, far off mountains, and the ocean in the distance when you hike Sleeping Giant Trail. Named because the mountain from a distance looks like the profile of a giant lying down, this 6.4 km (4 mi) trail (roundtrip) takes you through wide, grassy pastures, across a bridge, and over a stream. It is not for the unfit--you'll face an elevation gain of 305 m (1,000 ft). You'll climb an increasingly steep, though not technical, trail until you find yourself at a picnic bench at the top. Be sure to bring sunscreen, water, and bug spray, as some portions provide very little cover and insects can be quite active. Do not hike past the sheltered picnic area; terrain is extremely unstable beyond this point and venturing further has proved fatal for some visitors. This was a great hike with incredible views at the top! It’s a good workout but definitely doable. It was dry the day we did it but I could see how it would be slippery if wet.

It's a well marked trail but finding parking is difficult due to the limited number of parking spaces.

Incredible views, even if you only go up for 15minutes. Definitely try to stick it out to the top. About 100 floors up but not continuously up. One short steep Rocky section about 1/3 way up, otherwise hard packed dirt. We did on a dry day, probably would be quite slick on a wet day. We wore hiking boots but most wore running/tennis shoes. Flip flops not advised- lots of roots. Beautiful birds singing and some interesting plants along the way. Fairly shaded probably most days but still wear sunscreen and bring lots of water.
Great hike with an awesome view! So bring water, and good shoes, it was longer then I expected with about 1100’ elevation change. It’s fairly rough terrain and there’s a couple climbs over some rock faces and the last section is a decent slope. If it’s wet or raining it’ll be a very slippery trail. We’ll worth the trek!
It was a good hike it is close to kapaa, the views are really great from the top. It is a pretty steady climb and there are a few spots you will need to use your hands. It was dry when we did the hike but I have read that if it is wet it is muddy which would make it a harder hike. It was about 1.7-2 miles from the east parking lot to the top.
A decent hike that I would call a little bit harder than moderate but not quite "hard". It rained a little while we were there but not enough to get too muddy or slippery. I would suggest avoiding it if it's too wet and You're not a decent hiker. Good views going up and at the top. Parking was easy and right next to the trail head. Trail can be narrow at a few points and also some spots where you'll scramble a bit so be prepared.
My wife and I hiked this trail at 5am to summit by the sunset and it was worth every ounce of fortitude we had to gather to make it happen. As toads left the path as we passed by using the light form our phones, we slowly were able to summit with a bunch of switchbacks. The view during the sunrise is legend and one of the best things we did on Hawaii during our stay. You can hear all the roosters as the sun breaks the horizon. Epic. Highly recommend.
