At the center of Old Town, Key West Cemetery reveals the quirky history of this small city and its past residents. After a hurricane destroyed the former burial grounds, the city purchased land to establish this new cemetery in 1847. The main entrance at Passover and Angela Streets hands out pamphlets with a map and directions for a self-guided walking tour, or you can visit the website ahead of time to print off your copy. The tour suggests visiting the graves of William Curry, Florida’s first millionaire; “Sloppy” Joe Russell, Key West’s most popular barman; and B.P. “Pearl” Roberts, a hypochondriac whose headstone reads “I told you I was sick”; among other interesting characters who shaped the past of this city. • Nice peaceful bike ride thru the cemetery. So much like in New Orleans, very well kept. So many large family plots. Just very interesting to look at all the unique burial sites

  • It seems odd to review a cemetery, but this is a must see when touring Key West. Sad but interesting to see the above ground burials and the varying levels of caretaking and the breadth of people who have been laid to rest here. You will experience a range of emotions as you walk from the section where 59 unknown babies were sponsored and buried, to the section where many adorned their placards with verses that will make you laugh (ex: “I always said I would own a small piece of land in The Keys”). Well worth an hour or so of your time.
  • So much history in a beautiful public cemetery. If you enjoy the craftsmanship and have respect for those that have left this world you will not be disappointed. Be sure to look at the Jewish and Catholic burial areas and explore the farthest corners on foot.
  • Tranquil place teaming with life amongst the dead- birds, iguanas, bantam chickens, beautiful flora and fauna in this place. Many people were traveling through- on foot, by car and on bicycle. Very historic place where the great, wealthy, poor, blacks, whites, Hispanics, Jews, Catholics and Protestants are buried. On the highest natural location in Key West.
  • Always a must when we visit. We learn something new everytime . Very peaceful. We love looking for the oldest dates.
  • Great old historic cemetary that's crawling with iguana's. A must see while visiting Key West and to pay respect to the dead. This place has a nice memorial to the sailors that paid the ultimate price in the Battle of Havana Harbor on Feb. 15, 1898. The cemetary was relocated here long ago since it's the highest point on Key West and less apt to flooding. Worth a visit. FYI its separated by religion so take some time, each section has its own uniqueness.
