Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites is a historic state park located at 29.888° -96.876°, just off U.S. Route 77, south of La Grange, Texas. The park sits on a sandstone bluff above the Colorado River. Monument Hill is a crypt and memorial to the men who died in the Dawson Massacre and in the Black Bean Episode of the ill-fated Mier Expedition.
The Kreische Brewery site commemorates the contribution European immigrants made in Texas, specifically German immigrant, stonemason and brewer Heinrich Kreische, whose house and brewery ruins are in the park. The Kreische Brewery and house were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 1975.
On September 18, 1848, the remains of Texans killed in the Dawson Massacre and the Black Bean Episode (death lottery), which had been retrieved from their original burial sites, were reinterred in a common tomb with a sandstone vault at the location now known as Monument Hill. Over 1,000 people came for the ceremony including U.S. Senator Sam Houston.

  • Wonderful scenic hike with Texas history. Fee is very minimal, we went there during summer times, lot of shades through woods if you want a long hike to the site or take a small enjoyable walk to the overlook and stroll around park. Both sides you are going to enjoy different landscapes. I think we can really enjoy the nature and beauty during spring or fall, if you are going during summer time, try to go bit early( plenty of shades are there, humidity is high). Highly recommend this historical place👍👍👍👍
  • Monument Hill Historical Site has breathtaking views throughout the park. There is a beautiful scenic view there to check out also. This park is well kept and clean. The Kreische Brewery on site has a lot of history as well. The park has picnic areas where you can bring the family for some family time and fun. There are plenty of nature trails to explore also. Although we didn't explore the trails, according to the map outside, the trails are not very long. I highly recommend this park.
  • You must go! This is one of the prettiest places to hike in Texas. Take the Stairwell Trail! We packed a picnic and hiked down to the ruins. It is amazing. You will learn a lot here, very interesting history! $4 adults/$3 kids/dogs welcome.
  • A cool little gem of a park located a reasonable drive from Houston or Austin near La Grange. The park is very well kept and the story of Mr. Kreische is pretty amazing. His stonework is very impressive. The house but especially the brewery are a study in expert stone masonry. Take the time to head out, walk the grounds and picnic with a view for miles.
  • I recommend you visit; this is a nice day trip adventure. I thought the house and the brewery were both architectural marvels of their time. They were not open for tours the day we went, but we walked the property at our leisure so it was still a great time. They do hols events here throughout the year, so we plan to return for those. We then ventured into La Grange which is a nice little Texas town to visit as well.
