  • This was a nice complement to the Buchanan house guided tour. The spacious, bright galleries showcased an interesting overview of Lancaster history, including a short movie about President Buchanan.

  • Heading to Wheatland, James Buchanan's Estate you need to reserve at the Lancaster History museum. Having a little time before the next tour, we visited the 60's exhibit, a nice surprise...

  • This is not a huge museum but it's where to go to tour Wheatlands, President Buchanon's house. Most of the good stuff is in storage, which can be seen through glass within a corridor. Seeing Harpo.....  more

  • I didn't tour the museum because of my tight schedule, but its lobby and surroundings are beautiful. Parking was easy. I will tour the museum on my next visit.
  • I believe that I visited on 10/4, as I’m visiting from Goose Creek, SC. I’ve have a membership for at least 20 years now, if not more when it was a very small building. I was greeted rather coldly as I approached the counter and introduced myself and handed my membership card. I was told to put on the blue tag that attaches to clothing and that I couldn’t bring my brief case inside that I had to lock it up along with my coat and hat. (I can understand theft but how can I use my genealogy research that I brought with me if it’s not aloud the the research area! I was also told that I needed an appointment to research…heck, I’m a paying member coming in from South Carolina! She said the next appointments would be at 1pm…really! I followed the rules and o did go back to the research area and spoke with the lady behind the desk. I explained who I was where I’m coming from and would like to research. It was around 12:45pm and I had to fill out paperwork. She was very friendly compared to the first encounter I had. I also wanted to donate a newer updated version of my family history and I had to fill out paperwork and hen I donated our families genealogy since I the that is already on file is old and outdated. There was only 3 people in the research room and now it’s 1pm. I got to go in. I was so taken back that I felt humiliated and only stayed for about 45 minutes. My membership card states (valid 12/13/2021 to 4/8/2023. Many Years ago this place was so nice to come to. I retired from the military in 1999, and I use to visit more prior to 1999. Since I live now in South Carolina, i don’t come up to Lancaster that much anymore. I’m real hesitant to rejoin once this membership expires. (See my membership card minus my number that I covered up). Maybe someone will reach out to me about this review. I didn’t feel welcomed whatsoever.
  • This building has alot of historical information that goes back to the 1600s to the present time and alot of artifacts here including a wonderful presentation on the life of James Buchanan.
  • We went here to visit President Buchanan's home. Staff was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot. Sadly being available isn't always the best solution (history does repeat itself). But it was interesting to learn about the first first lady. Nice grounds, a lot of Lancasters history and close to the city for a good lunch.
  • Fabulous well presented history of Lancaster. Very welcoming and its free to look round. Bronze age right down to modern times. Lovely striking building in the heart of the city. Check it out.
