American Historical Society of Germans From Russia Museum and Library, Lincoln

Sneaky stuff. I had been there before and I missed 90 percent of it. They have a 20 min. video that explains why they left Russia. In it is a picture of the Havelock Shops in a building where they were constructing train steam engines. I lived across from there for 34 years and I had not seen that picture before. Most of the displays are on the second floor of the main building. In the basement is a research library. In the back are several more buildings. Unfortunately they are seasonly closed until April. There is a chapel, general store, blacksmith shop and a couple more buildings.

A small museum but worth the time to check it out!

I did not have a positive experience for my first visit. First I was there several minutes before any staff appeared and then I am told I should have made an appointment. I asked about the library and was told it cost $15 to use but it closes at 3 pm. I was there shortly after 2:30, then I was told becoming a member might be helpful. Membership is $50.00 year and it will still cost me $15 to use the library. There was only 2 display cabinets, 1 by front door with small odds and ends and 1 in an inner room with war memories. Very disappointing.

The Headquarters of the American Society Germans from Russia is located in Lincoln Nebraska. Its facilities houses a museum, a premier library containg thousands of research record of Germans living in Russia between 1760's to present day and of those that migrated to the United States to start a new life. The property houses full scale mock ups of a Lutheran church, general store, kitchen, and animal storage units.
