Convict Lake is a lake in the Sherwin Range of the Sierra Nevada in California, United States. It is known for its fishing and the dramatic mountains (including Mount Morrison) that surround the lake. Its surface lies at an elevation of 7850ft.Make Convict Lake Campground a part of your Mammoth Lakes vacation plans using our Mammoth Lakes trip builder website.
The lake was named after an incident on September 23, 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City. A posse, from Benton, led by Deputy Sheriff George Hightower, encountered the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek. Posse member Robert Morrison, a Benton merchant and Wells Fargo Agent, was killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.
Convict Lake is known for its fishing, including Rainbow trout, German brown trout, and a species of sucker fish. Due to the high demand of fishing in the lake and stream, the lake is stocked once a week during the summer with rainbow trout, supplied by nearby hatcheries. There is a three-mile trail for hiking around the lake and a trail that connects the lake to the Sierra Crest.

Convict Lake is great for a day trip of fishing or hiking. It also is a beautiful place to stay in the cabins. Daughter got married there and it was beautiful. Staff was wonderful.

Easy stop right off the highway. Great to hang out for a few hours and eat or rest. The lake is stunning and full. I was expecting lower levels given the lack of rain this year. People were fishing...

This is a very nice Campground within a walking distance to beautiful convict lake. Numerous sites are well spaced so you're not right on top of your neighbor, some sites very close to the stream that runs through the campground. The campground store is well stocked with food and tourist items and the prices are reasonable. Of course there is the restaurant and other more casual dining options to choose from. Bathrooms are clean and spacious. With actual flush toilets and sinks. You can either Reserve or take your chances on first come first to served but they're always seem to be sites available.
Nice campground, no hookups and can get very hot or very cold. Near the resort with its camp store. Marina with boats to rent $$$ Bathrooms have toilet and sink, can only run generators 3 hours at a time, 3 hour breaks, and off at quiet time. The lake and soaring mountain views are beautiful.
Campsites are spacious have nice tent pads. They have views of the mountain and only a couple sites allow views of the lake. No hookups. Bathrooms are flush and meticulously clean. Great hiking in the area. Oh and dont forget your cash or check for the iron ranger. No apple pay here. If you need wifi walk over to the lodge. You can also get showers and do laundry there.
Lots of deer. Good trout fishing in the creek. Pretty sparse vegetation but the birch bordering the creek provides ample privacy and beauty. Laurel Mountain and Mt. Morrison are absolutely spectacular, as well as Convict Lake. Camped here numerous times, first time in 1985. Love it here.
This campground is the best I've ever been to. Perfectly landscaped campsites with beautiful chaparral vegetation. Towards the center you start to see more lush greenery as the campsites are built around the creek. Walking distance from the lake, this campground is walking distance from many activities and always has a view of Mt Laurel. Quiet and peaceful, this serene campsite also has many deer that feel extremely comfortable roaming around the area.
