  • I’m a return customer from South Carolina and am routinely thrilled with this bookstore. The associates are pleasant and knowledgeable, courteous and eager to help. Even from a “remote” perspective, this place is just downright wonderful. I hope to stop by in person someday to experience the hospitality and service firsthand! Thanks, Words, and don’t stop doing what you’re doing!
  • Best local independent bookstore! The staff have excellent recommendations and there is something for everyone. Love the convenient location right in the the middle of Maplewood village. They're open later than some of the other stores, so it's a great place to browse and pick up books and gifts while waiting for a table.
  • I was waiting outside with my dog while my mom was shopping inside, and she left me with a bottle of cava she just bought. I left it standing by my feet because I'm under 21, and after a few minutes my dog knocks it right over. It didn't break, but I saw it fizzle. Employees from Words walk outside to talk about the window display, and a few minutes later one of them walks back outside with a Words paper bag and packaging air pillows. He took the fallen bottle of cava and tucked it safely in a paper bag with the air pillows for me. I didn't ask him to or anything. Wonderful worker.
  • Don’t recommend bringing your young children in here. Despite having a (albeit tiny) Children’s Section - an employee scolded us when our three year old picked a children’s book off the shelf and accidentally dropped it because we were damaging his inventory. (I caught the book - it never even touched the ground). My advice to the owners would be if you don’t want children touching books, don’t have a Children’s section in your store. This was my son’s favorite place to spend time in downtown, and we ALWAYS walked out of the store having purchased something. In the 11 months since we moved to Soma, we’ve spent over $700 at Words, according to a quick search on my credit card, but we won’t be stepping foot in the store again. We’ll be taking our son to Watchung Booksellers in Montclair instead - which has one of the best children’s selections in the area, and a staff that always makes families feel welcome. Shame. Maplewood deserves better.
  • A solid community bookstore in the heart of Maplewood. All new books, but the selection was decent. Graphic novel section was OK, but not extensive. It appears to be children friendly with a children's section taking up quite a bit of the real estate. Worth a stop if you are in Maplewood. As of this visit they still had a mask requirement prior to entry.
