Hungry Mother State Park is a state park in southwestern Virginia.

Much of the land for Hungry Mother State Park was donated by local landowners to develop a new state park in Smyth County on Hungry Mother Creek. The park is one of the six original CCC parks that opened in June 1936. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

  • We absolutely loved our 4-day visit! We stayed in cozy cabin #3, which had a fireplace in the bedroom. We hiked around the lake and soaked up the beauty of nature! We enjoyed hiking around the lake...

  • Nice campground with good hiking trails. Within 45 min of the Virginia Creeper bike trail and Appalachian trail. Nice lake and beach area.

  • I loved Hungry Mother State Park. My wife and I visited two days in May and everything was perfect. The beach and trails were almost empty, the weather was warm, and the water was amazing. The park staff do a great job with maintenance, information, and managing the park. The views are wonderful and the park is fantastic. A definite recommendation
  • My favorite state park by far. The views are literally heaven on earth. We went first thing in the morning & all you heard was birds and the water as the morning fog rolled away with the sunrise coming over the mountains. The rangers were beyond nice & helpful. Definitely going to come back & camp here.
  • Low-key but great. Beautiful lake which can be fished and swam in at certain points. Some biking trails are all uphill then down, but the Lake Trail is a fun, flowing trail that has a couple of semi-challenging sharp turns. You will love it.
  • Beautiful park. Many trails. Lots of history and large beautiful lake. 3 or more campgrounds in area. Nice park office exhibit. Hard to believe that 600 men built this park in such a short time frame before winter! Hard hand labor too.
  • Had a beautiful fall weekend at Hungry Mother State Park. We hiked so much with the reward being the views at the Molly’s Knob summit. Although, a separate hike, Clyburn Ridge Loop trail, was the more enjoyable hike. We stayed in Cabin #8 (photos included). We were only disappointed that we could not rent kayaks on such a beautiful weekend (though the state parks website indicates it’s an option on October weekends) and the guided kayak tour (our back-up option) was canceled.
