Established in the 1930s, Greater Light once served as a summer retreat for Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan, two Quaker sisters that came from Philadelphia. The site illustrates the area's art history--an artist colony thrived here after the whaling industry declined. See Greater Light and all Nantucket has to offer by arranging your trip with our Nantucket day trip planning website.

  • I have been coming to the island for a long time and somehow had never even heard of this truly very interesting spot. Nice grounds to sit and relax or picnic (not sure that's allowed). For a small place, there is a lot to contemplate and look at. Easy walk from downtown, with really enthusiastic and informative guides. Definitely recommended.
  • Very excellent...a slice of history if you know the real story of Paul Revere, it is not like the poem. They won't tell it but that is ok, i guess. The tower is there where the lanterns were shown. Go and see and feel history. 1 if by land, 2 if by sea
