Egan Maritime Institute's Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum features permanent and changing exhibitions that will fascinate both adults and children. Highlights in the collection of over 5000 artifacts include period surfboats, beach carts, Fresnel lenses from Brant Point and Great Point Lighthouses, vintage photographs and short films about famous wrecks and rescues.

The museum preserves the memory of those Islanders who risked their lives to save shipwrecked mariners. These men served in organizations devoted to maritime rescue, such as the Massachusetts Humane Society, United States Life-Saving Service and the United States Coast Guard.

  • Learning about sea rescues and the origin of the Coast Guard is fascinating. My teen also enjoyed this small museum. Super easy to take the free shuttle and well worth the side trip. A hidden gem!

  • The museum is extremely small, with not a ton of physical things to look at. Our visit probably only took 15 minutes max. When we entered we were greeted by a worker who gave us a short talk and explanation about shipwrecks around the island, and he did a great job. He showed some of the life saving equipment in the front room, and was very knowledgeable about the history of the island. Beyond the initial welcome to the museum, there wasn’t much to do or so, as the place only really has 2-3 rooms total. Don’t plan to spend tons of time here. The one convenient thing, was the information center downtown offers a free shuttle van back and forth, so we were able to get her easily.
  • What a lovely place! On an island that seems to have forgotten its past and has now devolved in to the ultimate consumer exploitation centre, it was lovely going somewhere that really gave you an understanding of what it used to be like on Nantucket!! Lovely staff, great value, amazing stories and a lovely setting, don't miss it!
  • There is a shuttle to the museum! Lovely ride out. Great little museum with Acton of history on shipwrecks and the teams that saved them!
  • Excellent place to visit on a rainy day or any day on Nantucket. Stop by on the Polpis Rd bike path. Reasonably priced admission. They had kids activities and a little play house for kids near the parking lot.
  • Beautiful museum in a beautiful location, well worth the trip out of town. Lots of fascinating and very informative exhibits, and beautifully restored relics from the era. We had a great guide as well, definitely recommend asking for a tour if it's available.
