Home to a large number of artifacts, tools, and displays, Whaling Museum documents the history of the industry in the region. Though controversial and outlawed today, the practice of whaling played a crucial role in the economic and human development of New England. Examine the instruments used by whalers to find, hunt, and process whales; the press for extracting whale oil is the only example of its kind remaining in its original place of use. Be sure to examine the whaling-related artwork throughout the facility. You'll find that the giant sperm whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling provides an impressive centerpiece for the museum. If you have time, try climbing up to the observation deck for a view over the Nantucket harbor. Make Whaling Museum a centerpiece of your Nantucket vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Nantucket travel route planner.

  • LOVED this museum! The exhibits were really well done--signs were readable and clearly explained what we were looking at. I knew a fair amount about whaling from having visited a number of museums.....  more

  • The organization of the museum is a little confusing, especially if you are also listening to the audio tour, but, that said, it is a must for solid history. Good balance of objects to text. They do.....  more

  • This spot comes up as the top suggestion for something to do when it's raining on Nantucket and I agree, check it out! I honestly probably wouldn't have gone if it was not raining, but I was...

  • Small museum with lots to see and there's even a toddlers discovery section! We easily spent an hour here just casually strolling through. There's a nice view on the roof deck. The kids discovery center had staff there helping kids make their own bracelets. Worth the visit!
  • If you are thinking about coming to the whaling museum, I’ll give you a few reasons why you absolutely should: 1. The museum is interesting, fun, and enjoyable to spend time in. It’s interesting because the way the curators tell the story of whaling and the history of the island is done extremely well. It’s fun because the information is accessible and can be interpreted by a wide range of age groups, and it’s enjoyable because there is so much to learn and so much history involved in the process that made Nantucket what it is today. 2. You can tell there was a lot of work that went into the exhibits, it shows. As you move through the spaces in the museum it’s almost like entering a storybook. You are transported to the places in the story they are telling. This was impressive to me but my kids absolutely loved it. This place will spark the imagination. 3. There is an accessible roof area that will give you 360 degree views of the historic downtown and the water. It’s incredible beautiful. 4. The staff is friendly and helpful. Normally ticket prices are 20 for an adult and children under six are free. The staff is knowledgeable about the museum and will give you the inside information on what to see. 5. There is an incredible children’s section of the museum. This is a fantastic place to take kids if you are a parent. They also have a photo booth that you can take family photos in and they are free to email to yourself. Note: No food or drink. So, if you are thinking of coming here I’d definitely recommend going. Feel free to look at the photos of the space that I added. It should give you a good idea of what you are getting into.
  • Everyone Who visits Nantucket should make a trip to the Whaling Museum. Is an excellent opportunity to learn about the history of the island and the people who made it what it is. Although the whaling, as a practice, ended on the island 150 years ago, there is lots of rich history in the museum.
  • Dont miss the the sepia tone FILM of actual whaling voyages in the ground floor exhibit room. And take the lift to the Observation Deck for a stunning view of Nantucket harbor and Sound.
  • The whale exhibits were interesting but the 3rd floor had one of the most amazing Chinese collections of antiquity. It’s definitely a diamond in the rough.
