Create an itinerary including Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium
Sixteen attractions--including live insect galleries, interactive exhibits, and films all about bugs--make Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium the largest museum of insects in the United States. Opened in 2008 as part of the larger Audubon Nature Institute, the insectarium received the Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement in a Science Center in 2009. Hang out among hundreds of butterflies in the butterfly garden, or watch Formosan termites eat away at a wooden replica of the New Orleans skyline. In the historic U.S. Customs House, the Hall of Fame gallery shows off the world's biggest, fastest, and most impressive bugs. Check out the Bug Appetit show, where chefs cook up interesting concoctions featuring insects. If you're feeling adventurous, you can sample the delicacies. • I've been to a few butterfly gardens and I do prefer the semi outdoor and/or more spacious ones. Still, kudos here for making due with the more urban restrictions.

  • Fantastic experience. I understand it's the biggest insect zoo in the US, and it's very well done. All different kinds of creepy-crawlies, with interesting information, often done in a fun and quirky way (just wait until you see the cockroach exhibit). There are also some animals besides insects, like small gators and turtles. The butterfly garden is the highlight, saved until the very end, and you can spend a good hour in there without even realizing it. Ideal location right at the edge of the French Quarter. Well worth the price of admission. There's a modest AAA discount, and good combination discounts if you also want to go to the aquarium.
  • Very interesting place to visit. Has loads of exhibits in a medium sized building. In walking distance of the Aquarium with signs leading the way. The Butterfly Room was very cool. Be careful when inside, Butterflies will land on you. Watch toddlers closely. The Ant Hill room is neat also. A very unique design.
  • This placed is as little pricey if you just go here. If you buy the annual pass for all three locations, including the zoo and the aquarium, it's not so bad - especially for a large family. It is worth doing at least once. It doesn't take a long time to go through the whole museum. The bug food samples are pretty cool. There's a pretty good 4D movie that's about 10 minutes. The butterfly room is really neat.
  • Well worth the money! They have a variety of exhibits and take great care of all their living creatures. The butterfly garden is amazing, and you can watch butterflies hatching out of their cocoons!
  • Exhibits were both interesting. Lots of roaches! All sorts of interesting bugs and some other Louisiana wildlife like gators and fish. The little kids in our group (under 2) enjoyed but did not hold their attention like the aquarium did. A bit young still for this one. The butterfly garden was very cool. Wear bright clothes and sit still and they will visit you. Please give me a like if you find this review helpful.
