Lanikai Pillboxes, Kailua

Stunning views as always. Beautiful colours. Steep climbing, easier if you have sturdy shoes. Highly recommend. Lots of tourists. It is in a residential area, you can find street parking but it’s closer to the beach, you’ll then have to walk up hill to the beginning of the hike.

What an amazing sunrise! We left Honolulu at 5am to get over to the hike in time. Luckily we got one the few available parking spots at the base of the hike, otherwise it's a short walk from the beach parking. Go early and get to the top before the sun comes up! Totally worth it. The hike itself is a little strenuous at times. Can definitely get your heart pumping, but you can also just take your time and it's pretty easy. Think we got to the top in half an hour. There are two pillboxes and if you are going for the sunrise, get to one and get a good seat so you can enjoy it. 5 out of 5 experience. We will be doing this one again in the near future.

Nice and easy hike, with some small but steep areas. Two pillboxes that give you a nice view of Kailua and Turtle Island. Lots of nice places to stop on the way up, too! Becomes a bit of a race against the clock when the sun starts going down, so maybe make your way down once the sun dips below the horizon.

Breathtaking sunrise! Totally worth getting up early!! The hike wasn’t strenuous. However the trail was quite muddy and slippery in January and it was quite dark. So, expect to use the flashlight on phone and wear hiking boots

Always a great hike, just super busy from before sunrise to sunset. Great views of the windward side of Oahu from Makapu Lighthouse to Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Note the the start is a little difficult, but ropes are available if you need the assistance. The beginning of the trail can also be very slippery if there has been rain or it has been so dry that it's dusty. Easy enough to take young kids on though which makes this hike good for families!
