Thomas Stone National Historic Site, Port Tobacco

So much history I didn't know about Thomas Stone and his family. He signed the Declaration of Independence and played a major role in Maryland's political history. Most don't know about him because he wasn't a military leader but rather a quiet lawyer during the American Revolution. Maryland soldiers heading into battle had the uniforms, food and ammo they needed because Thomas and his family insured they were all equipped to fight. Maryland's militia were the only ones during the war that were so well supplied. If you're into history, you'll find the tour enlightening!

This is a historical site of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. I'm not much into learning about the history of a historical slave "owner," but there are tours of the house if you're just interested in going in and looking around. I was more interested in hiking around seeing the beautiful fall colors and the scenery here did not disappoint. The hike is fairly easy, leashed dogs are allowed, and even horses are allowed on the trails as well. There's a visitor's center with an attendant that will let you know the tour times for the house and tell you which way to go for that or the hiking trail. Everyone there was very kind and helpful. The gate doesn't open until 10 am and closes at 4 pm. So, plan on finding alternate parking if you decide to go before opening or after closing time. If you go during open hours, there's plenty of parking and there are picnic tables if you choose to have lunch there. There's no entry fee and the trail is easy to follow even without paint markers asking the way.

Reaaaally cool! Ask the park ranger at the desk about the parks history. He could talk about it for hours and the history behind the house and who was in it is fascinating. (Being vague to not spoil it for you) You can’t go in the Stone’s house, but you can go into the tobacco house. There are some walking trails, but be careful as they can be muddy.

Beautiful National Park to hike, picnic and just chill out in. Rangers are friendly, There is a very informative video and the house toure is nice. However, this house is rebuilt from a pre ious fire.

My dogs and I love walking here year round. Spring is beautiful!
