  • Gorgeous day for a hike. Loved the wide gravel and dirt paths on the River Trail. So many lovely benches to stop and enjoy the view. And what a view it is! The James River is spread out in it's smooth, slowly-flowing glory, inviting you to sit and enjoy the vibe. The trail is mostly wooded, so would be great on a sunny day. I really liked the QR code tree labels to help identify. Also really enjoyed the singing birds and the speeding turtle I rescued from the access road. Fun day!
  • Had a great day at the park. Well kept and clean grounds. The bathrooms were well lit and clean. The staff at the office were delightful and able to answer all my questions. Trails were easily discernible and well flashed. Plan to return soon for some kayaking and camping.
  • One of the best state parks in the Richmond VA area. Newer park, so all facilities are in pristine shape. Miles of beautiful trails, 3 canoe ramps into the James river, 2 camping areas, equine trails, and huge beautiful fields. I love the camping. The two camp areas are: 1-Canoe In for $15/night (includes parking pass), which has a canoe ramp right in it with 9 sites, firewood stocked at all times for $6/12 pieces honor system pay, all sites are marked off with timbers and have graveled level areas for tents, picnic tables and fire rings, one bathroom with toilet only, densely wooded, absolutely beautiful, you can drive and park (camp sites are about 0.2 miles from the nearest parking lot). 2-Regular Camping for $35/night, 16 sites (I think) and 6 yurts, nice restroom with toilets and showers, several trailer/rv sites, all sites have power and water hookups (park had RV dump site), all sites graveled and level, all sites have trees between them for privacy, includes parking pass so you can drive to different parts of the park, attendants that live on site for assistance at any time, sites are cleaned after every stay... Both camping places are totally worth it. Also, animals are allowed. Have fun! And remember, pack in pack out - never leave any trash, take everything you brought with you out with you (there are plenty of trash cans and a dumpster)
  • Large sites, graveled, mostly level, fire pit with grills, space between sites and trees! Wonderful place. Bathrooms were exceptionally clean when we stayed. Quiet and clean area. Rangers were friendly and helpful. Only one snafu. Checked in on a Friday and told by the person at gatehouse we would receive a map on our site post. Our name was there with checkout info etc but no map. When my partner asked the camphost about the map (and told would be on the post), he became a little huffy, and finally gave us a map. He said the person at the gatehouse was wrong. We sort of felt like we were in the wrong even asking. All went well after that. Would definitely come again and enjoy this gem of a state park!
  • Beautiful water view and well maintained campsites. Note Canoe campsites need to hiking in a bit… quite a workout for us without wheels…
