The American Chestnut Land Trust (ACLT) is a local land trust in Calvert Co., Maryland, an hour's drive from both D.C. and Baltimore. 22 miles of free trails, guided canoe/kayak trips up the beautiful creek, and lots of events and activities celebrating this beautiful region and the Chesapeake Bay. Dedicated to caring for the land, ACLT also manages a small farm, educational garden and food forest all focused on regenerative and perma-culture growing. • Stopped by today for the 35th Anniversary Celebration and Volksmarch. The Holly Hill trail is a true gem! It can be challenging on the steeper hills and steps for those with mobility issues, but for your average hiker, it should not be a problem. I was unaware of the incredible conservation efforts by ACLT. I experienced interaction with the wonderful staff who were able to answer my questions and guide me in the right direction. I could sense the dedication of all in involved in the mission set forth by the ACLT. I look forward actively participating in the efforts of land conservation with the ACLT in the future! To everyone involved in today’s celebration, great work! I loved the band!
  • During the summer, the trails were well maintained with stairs in steep areas. The forest undergrowth was very lush, and the vegetation varied along the way. We also saw painted rocks with messages placed at various locations.
  • Great hiking trails. Some marked better than others. The pink North/south trail had some steep hills. The south trail head has a bathroom and a helpful map. There is a neat raft you have to use to cross a river too!
  • A wonderful day hike option. Was able to hike here for about 2 hours with my 9-year-old son, primarily sticking to the purple trail. We were delighted to find a bunch of little surprises along the way, including a Huckleberry Finn style raft that you can pull yourself from one bank to the other on. Stunning views along the Parkers River. Easy, free parking with two portable restrooms right when you get out of your car. There are paper maps by the trail or you can download one to your phone. Even without a map, all trails are color marked very easily. The only thing to be aware of... Please bring bug spray! On the last half of our hike, we were almost carried off by mosquitoes as we were close to the water and they stuck with us even as we hiked away from the water. So just know this when you come! Most of the trails are fully shaded with lots of wildlife along the way! Would definitely recommend!
  • Visited Parker's Creek Preserve, walking the East Loop which is a short 2 mile loop through old growth forest. It's a very visually attractive forest, with a stream running through it and huge, old Northern Red Oaks, Tuliptrees, Hickories, Beeches, Chestnut Oaks and White Oaks as well as various pines.
