Sited on a hilltop overlooking a lush valley and a bay, Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau State Monument represents the largest Hawaiian temple on the island. Local legend has it that a volcano goddess leaped from this elevated spot to the next island. The archeological remains date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and it seems that the upper platform served as a sacrificial altar. Today you can see a visitor altar "guarded" by hens and roosters at the upper end of the ruins, testifying to the importance this sacred site still has for the locals. Keeping that in mind, try not to disturb anything.
