Sailor's Creek Battlefield is one of our 37 Virginia State Parks. Please visit our official page at http://www.facebook.com/virginiastateparks

Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is a great place to stop for lunch because it's midway between Petersburg and Appomattox Court House. There are charcoal grills and picnic tables at the Overton-Hillsman House and the visitor center grounds. No water is available. A pit-toilet is available during daylight hours.

It's a historical site because on April 6, 1865 - the Black Thursday of the Confederacy - Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia lost 7,700 men, including eight generals, in the Battle of Little Sailor's Creek. This defeat was key to Lee's decision to surrender at Appomattox Court House 72 hours later, thus ending the war in Virginia. Click here to download a brochure that details the battle (PDF).

The Overton-Hillsman House, used as a field hospital during and after the battle, is open to visitors June through August and by request at other times. Contact the park at (804) 561-7510 or email sailorscreek@dcr.virginia.gov to arrange a special tour. Period costumed interpreters commemorate the event and conduct other living history events throughout the year. Motorists will enjoy Lee's Retreat Driving Tour, which follows the route of his army from Petersburg to Appomattox Court House. While on the trail, drivers can set the radio to AM 1610 for battle details and descriptions. Learn more about this offering by visiting the Virginia's Civil War Trails website or calling toll-free 1-888-CIVIL-WAR. Trail travel packages are available as well; call 1-800-769-5912 for details.

  • First we walked the battlefield trails. The dogs loved it. Nice wide paths so we could easily walk side by side and chat. There were about a dozen people out there and it is so beautiful and quiet...

  • Absolutely amazing park! Lots of history, but not an overwhelming amount, beautiful scenery, and helpful staff. Definitely recommend for a half day trip or coupled with something else, but you won't need a full day for this park.
  • This was a beautiful hike - went January 2021. I feel like a winter hike is underappreciated - but they’re awesome. I had the park almost entirely to myself. Trails are wide & well marked although some were a bit muddy the closer I got to Saylers Creek. Lots of informational posts throughout the park regarding the nature of the battle which according to park information is the last significant battle prior to the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Terrain is stark in the winter landscape, but still beautiful. Well worth the outing- visitor center is open & has a nice museum, Ranger was knowledgeable & helpful- he gave me an awesome trail map which was helpful in navigating the park so I got the most out of my hike. Loved that you could get perspective on the battle from both the union & confederate perspective
  • The last major battle fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. It was caused by the supply train being bogged down at the two bridges at Sailor's Creek. Lee lost about one third of his Army here including eight generals. Most of the troops were captured.
  • Secluded little state park with easy trails. Great for younger kids or people looking for an easy quiet walk. Little shade in most areas. Nice little creek and lots of easy boulders for kids to explore.
  • The first place you should go before hiking any of the trails. The perspective you gain from the excellent historical references presented at the visitor center will add to your experience. The driving trail for Lee's retreat is well worth the time. It will also add to your visit to High Bridge which is an engineering wonder and note to be missed.
