Two former presidents are buried in Hollywood Cemetery. The remains of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, are contained in a Gothic Revival-style tomb nicknamed The Birdcage. A monument to the tenth president, John Tyler, stands near to Monroe's in Presidents Circle. Other must-sees include the 27 m (90 ft) pyramid that stands as a memorial to the 18,000 Confederate soldiers buried here; the grave of Jefferson Davis, the only Confederate president, marked by a lifesize statue; and the iron dog that stands watch over the grave of a little girl who died in 1862. Established in 1849, the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. From Palmer Chapel Mausoleum or Davis circle, you'll find the best views of the mighty James River. Take a walking tours to learn more about the history of the cemetery and the people buried here. We had to drive around several times to find all the stops we wanted to make as the office was closed and we did not have a map. It was like a treasure hunt and down by the tomb of Jefferson Davis...

I absolutely love visiting cemeteries! This one definitely wowed me. So much history and it is beautiful! Photos do not do it justice! If you’re ever in the area give it a visit!

I think this is a must visit in Richmond. Beautiful grounds and the views from near Presidents circle of the river and city are unmatched. Cemeteries usually freak me out but the feeling here is somehow more upbeat. There is a ton of history there and the visitors appreciate it. I encourage anyone to give it a visit, preferentially in the daytime, I am not brave enough to traverse these hollowed grounds in the dark.

Very peaceful and historical cemetery. You can choose to walk or drive through. Some of the paths are pretty steep.

I really enjoy visiting this cemetery, it is peaceful, beautiful, has nice views. In June magnolias are blooming and the air smells amazing.

It's free and a nice tranquil walk to take among the hills of Richmond. There are also some pretty nice views of the James River (right near the presidents graves). The cemetery is very well maintained and there are some pretty ornate grave sites. There is a restroom at the entrance of the grounds. It's a medium distance walk (~1mi) from city center (the Capital area) or a short ride-share. You can easily spend 1-3 hours or more walking around the grounds and really just depends on how long you take to read inscriptions and admire the grave sites.
