The Myrtles Plantation is a historic home and former antebellum plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, United States. Built in 1796 by General David Bradford, it is touted as "one of America's most haunted homes."
ArchitectureSited on a hill, the eastward facing frame house, with a clapboard exterior, is built in the Creole cottage-style that characterized many Louisiana plantation houses in the 19th-century. The original house was built in 1796 and featured six bays and three dormers on the roof. In the mid-1850s, the one-and-a-half-story house was extended south, almost doubling its size, and increased to nine bays including a new double door entrance. The entry doors are surrounded with a transom and sidelights, showcasing original hand-painted stained glass, etched and patterned after the French cross to allegedly ward off evil. The main feature of the Myrtles is the 125-foot long veranda that extends the entire length of the façade, and wraps around the southern end of the house. The ornamental cast-iron railing, with an elaborate grape-cluster design, supports a broad Doric entablature, and on the gabled roof, with six brick chimneys, are two large double paned, pedimented dormers with Doric style pilasters, interspersed with three single paned dormers. When the original roof of the house was extended to encompass the new addition, the existing dormers were copied to maintain a smooth line. The west facing rear façade features a central, open loggia that is enclosed on three sides by the house, and on the roof are five pedimented dormers identical to the front.

  • Advertised as the most haunted estate in Louisiana. We were not disappointed. Tickets for the guided tour are a must. We enjoyed hearing stories and walking through the spaces seeing how they were decorated. The guide also told us several stories about prior residents and connected some of these people to ghosts who still haunt the estate. In the general store, you can see photos on display showing more evidence of other worldly shades and shadows. Ample parking and gardens to walk through with lots of shade. Good way to spend time while you wait for your tour. While we visited, other guests were arriving to checking in to the bed and breakfast.
  • Recently took a family vacation to La. We stayed at the Myrtles one night. The customer service is great, the staff is very friendly and helpful. The tour guides are pretty good. And they all have their own personal stories that add to the tour. The beds are surprisingly comfortable. I expected the vintage furniture to be less so, I was wrong. Wether the place is haunted or not is debatable but we really enjoyed the experience. We may make this a yearly destination.
  • I'm an author who was in the area doing research. I've been wanting to visit The Myrtles for a long time and since I was in Louisiana, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to stop by. Meagan was our tour guide. I met her first in the gift shop, then on the tour. She was so fun and personable. Her knowledge of the property and the furnishings in the house was extensive and impressive. She certainly made the visit very worthwhile and enjoyable. The grounds were utterly stunning. I'm so thankful for everyone there who made our visit so memorable.
  • I am into all things spooky so of course I had to book a stay at one of America’s most haunted homes! Unfortunately, I didn’t see any ghosts, but I did hear tons of ghost stories! I stayed on a Tuesday night so sadly the restaurant was closed but the breakfast was good! The coffee shop has the best hot chocolate and yummy pastries. Connie gave the day time tour and she was amazing! They also do not do the evening ghost tours on Tuesdays, but I booked a private one and Alyssa was awesome! I even got to speak to the night caretaker who filled me in on some guest stories! I stayed in the Woodruff suite. Everything was clean and beautiful. I was so sad to leave this place! The grounds are also gorgeous! Staff is beyond kind. Hope to go back again one day!
  • Great food and Tours of the Myrtles plantation!! Loved it all so much. The restaurant has absolutely amazing food and a fantastic atmosphere. The tour of the plantation home was extraordinarily interesting and had a lot of history and historical artifacts inside. Our tour guide has been working there for many years and had extraordinary knowledge of everything in the home and all the stories and lineage pertaining to the owners and caretakers of the home. The grounds are very nice and you can walk all through them freely on trails. The cabins look amazing to stay in, however I did not stay in one. The hotel looks lovely. I would love to stay there as well but didn't have time. I would go back in a heartbeat. 😍 Fabulous place to visit.
