Create an itinerary including USS Pampanito
Step aboard USS Pampanito, a veteran Balao-class submarine that allows you to see how crews lived and worked aboard the vessel during the World War II. Constructed in 1943 to meet America's need for advanced submarines, the craft helped patrol shipping lanes in the Pacific theater and on several occasions engaged and sunk Japanese ships. Visit this National Register of Historic Places-listed museum/ship, and explore the corridors and tight spaces where her crew spent months at a time at sea. You'll find bunk beds, periscopes, the engine room, the torpedo tube, and more inside; many mechanisms are still in working condition today. Plan your visit to USS Pampanito and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our San Francisco online trip builder.

  • There was only one other person on the sub around 3:30 on a Thursday. It was pretty neat. For the audio, you scan a QR code and play it on your phone. I didn’t have any headphones so was playing it...

  • This was such a great visit. We are able to board and walk though a historic submarine. I couldn't imagine all the men on there at once. Very good experience.

  • I passed on this sub visit but my husband really enjoyed it. The audio tour was very good, and he was the only one there at the time so he could be as slow as he liked!

  • Wonderful piece of history! Located in the middle of the touristy location of San Francisco - Pier 45. Parking nearby is scarce, you may consider parking further away and taking a cable car or a bus to get there. Self-guided tour recordings made by actual crew of the submarine are available - a QR code to access them is available at the ticketing Over a thrilling experience since the submarine is in the water, you get to hear water hitting the side of it and rocking it left and right It's quite cramped inside, in case you are claustrophobic! Masks are required to enter into the submarine
  • Having never experienced being on a sub before, this was a very interesting experience. I like that it’s self guided, unfortunately they don’t offer Internet connection to download their audio guide. Anyways just wandering around in the sub was fun, and trying to imagine what it was like to be stuck on that ship for weeks and weeks and months on end with a group of 70 other people. I don’t know how they didn’t go crazy, but a great experience. Oh my goodness, could you imagine sleeping over a torpedo??!!
  • It was a great place full of rich history but is not for the faint if heart as it is hard to maneuver and I would say is only for true historical lovers. But it was super cool and compared to other places is the area is pretty cheap. Overall a 10/10 place to visit!
  • The Pampanito is kept in really really great condition. It's a little pricey to get on board considering the USS Hornet is $5 cheaper but if you love submarines it really is a must see. The downside being is that there's a good amount of components blocked off. With good reason of course it's a museum piece but just as a warning before taking your kids. 👍👍
  • I loved it, what a fascinating tour of a WWII Diesel Sub. On top of its historic value it was also used in the movie "Down Periscope" which I realised after. The ticket cost is 25 dollars and its frankly worth it. The tour is well guided with audio and I was guided by a veteran Submariner so I discovered so much extra on a first hand basis. It was a real highlight of my trip.
