Bergamot Station is the historical name for the site on which the gallery complex is located, dating back to 1875 when it was a stop for the Red Line trolley running from Los Angeles to the Santa Monica Pier. Bergamot is a flower of the mint family that once flourished in the area.

When the trolley cars stopped running in 1953, the site’s warehouse buildings housed a celery packing operation, then an ice-making plant, and finally a factory for the manufacture of water heaters. Thereafter, the City of Santa Monica purchased the property which then sat abandoned, with plans for it to once again serve as an eventual transit stop, this time for a proposed light rail line running from Los Angeles to Santa Monica.

Plans for the light rail were eventually shelved and the City, seeking an interesting use for the site, approached Wayne Blank, developer and co-owner of the Shoshana Wayne Gallery. Blank’s development expertise has already been tapped by the City of Santa Monica for an earlier project: the conversion of a vacant city-owned airport hangar into artists’ studios. The City, pleased with the project’s outcome, asked Blank to conceive of an artistic use for the Bergamot Station site. Bergamot Station, a campus-like complex that has retained its industrial and rustic look, held its official opening on September 17, 1994.

Since its launch, Bergamot Station has become a popular destination for visitors from around the country and the world. Bergamot Station provides a central location which allows visitors to park in one place and spend the day seeing art, rather than spending time driving from one gallery to the next. It now appears in every guide to Los Angeles as a primary cultural destination, with well over 600,000 visitors each year.

  • We had the pleasure of visiting the Begamot Station Arts to visit all of the galleries. The location is eclectic and charming and a hidden gem. We started at the Danziger gallery which was beautiful with great photography. We loved Ben Pier’s artwork and follow him everywhere. He travels throughout the world and you feel like you were traveling with him. The other photographer did black and white pictures of the beach and LA. They are incredible and capture that era. We visited the other galleries and they were all unique. Ex: Richard Heller Gallery, Rose Gallery, Skidmore Contemporary Art, etc There’s great places to eat nearby. It’s a relaxing and education experience. Enjoy your art adventure.
  • This is an amazing cluster of art galleries. Stop by just about any time and enjoy an array of creative pieces that will encourage you to relax.
  • It's always a good time where you can lose hours without realizing it. We love Lois Lambert's place to wrap each visit. We like to buy gifts there and it's a perfect place to take out-of-town visitors.
  • It is a really nice place with varieties of artwork displaying and purchase options. But these art pieces are not offering to much information from galleries. I am not a crazy fan and know a lot about modern art, so they take me long time to figure out and appreciate them some time.
  • Love this 0lace with so many art galleries. It s great to go when they have events where you can wander around with a glass of wine etc. Otherwise it s great but usually a bit quiet
