Boasting a decorative arts collection of Owens' family furnishings and original American and European objects dating from 1750 to 1830, Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters is a prime example of English Regency architecture in America. Guided tours of the mansion and English-inspired parterre gardens are offered throughout the day. You also can see one of the earliest slave quarters in the South. Designed by the young English architect William Hay, the mansion was built from 1816 to 1819 for the wealthy cotton merchant Richard Richardson. The Owens-Thomas family house purchased the house and later donated it to the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences. One of the most notable visitors was Marquis de Lafayette, a revolutionary war hero who stayed at the house in 1825 and allegedly delivered a speech from one of the balconies on the south side of the house. Photography and video is not permitted inside the house. • Great place to visit, admission includes this location and 2 other great buildings nearby. Spent about an hour doing the self-guided audio tour of the museum. I highly recommend the architectural tour of the exterior, it’s free on the website even if you don’t have entry to the museum. The historical kitchen and ice box were my favorite parts, pretty unique collection and stories.
  • Powerful and humbling tour. Our guide Tyrone was extremely knowledgeable about the House and Slave quarters and also added in a little of other historical information to paint a clear picture of what life was like for the slaves as well as the owners. The slave quarters and House were well kept and you were able to see how life was like. Highly Highly recommend this tour. Please try to get Tyrone as a guide because he was amazing.
  • Interesting experience that really showcases life in old Savannah and some of the impact of slavery on the city. The museum does a good job of referencing the topic of enslavement in a delicate and respectful way, although it barely scratches the surface of its horrors. The museum is a bit small, but it packs a lot of information into a small space and the guides are extremely knowledgeable. Definitely worth a stop while in town, and your ticket will get you into two other excellent museums for free.
  • It's not a bad museum, but it's not really great either. It's a house that had slave quarters and relied on slave labor. We need more of this reminder, but this one just didn't do it. Now, I will say, things are well preserved and the audio tuor that you can just pull up on your phone is a nice feature. There were some cool things about the house, like the cistern system, the architecture and the fact.that they have different molding in each room. IDK, it just seemed like they are trying to do too much at one time. It's not bad, but if you are one a time budget, cut this out.
  • A piece of History! I highly recommend getting tickets in advance as this is a guided tour. Lots to explore here, AND I'd recommend giving yourself about 2 hours for this stop. Tickets for this House also gives you access to two other museums as well.
