Staunton River is one of our 37 Virginia State Parks. Please visit our official page at http://www.facebook.com/virginiastateparksUse our Scottsburg tour itinerary planner to add Staunton River State Park and other attractions to your Scottsburg vacation plans.
The park was recognized in 2007 as a National Historic Landmark and a Virginia Historic Landmark. Many structures in the park, including the cabins, pool-house and picnic shelters, are little changed from when they were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. Tucked away in south central Virginia, the park lies between the Dan and Staunton Rivers at the threshold of Buggs Island Lake (also known as Kerr Reservoir). The largest lake in Virginia is only one of the park’s many attractions, which include an Olympic size pool with a 70-foot waterslide, a smaller log slide and the Pollywog Pond, which is a water playground for children (there is a size limit on this pool). The shaded campgrounds, rustic cabins, picturesque picnic shelters, well-maintained nature trails, and plenty of exciting outdoor opportunities for the whole family make Staunton River State Park the perfect place for your vacation.

Started at the Visitor Center and couldn't get over the number of birds all around. They were busy chirping away while flitting around the bird house across the back tree line. Took a short hike to see the Dan River overlook, the headed over to the boat launch area to get an amazing view of the Staunton River. Checked out the really cute picnic shelters with not one but two working fireplaces. Really nice park!

What a wonderful experience!!! I can not wait to return!!! The park staff are very friendly and professional. The park itself very clean. We stayed in cabin #5 the smallest cabin, though I don’t know why they call it that. My husband and I had plenty of space and I found it quite romantic. The town’s people were also very friendly. They Walmart near by is a great place to stock up on supplies before you head to the park so you can immerse yourself in the park and relax. There are lots of trails to explore and fishing during the day. We saw they have a pool and playground area as well. ( it was the off season when we visited so the pool was closed) two large picnic areas with a second playground area as well. But what they are best known for is being a dark park! After hours is when the magic of the park comes alive!!! I have never seen so many stars in my life! It was amazing and for me a spiritual experience. I encourage everyone to experience this or one of the other dark parks in Virginia at least once I promise you that you will not regret it.

Very nice and well kept. Lots of trails. Good restroom and showers. Areas are well marked. I will let the pictures do the rest of the talking. I have taken a few already and will update with more later.

First off the staff at the visitor center were wonderful, genuinely friendly and tons of help. Ran the trails to get a feel and look around the place. Look forward to checking it out again after winter has past.

Gorgeous park. Will definitely be bringing the family back for some kayaking, and the cabins overlooking the river are great. Gift shop was also a step above most other parks. Had to bodily drag my wife and daughter out of there!
