U.S. National Arboretum provides a home for trees, gardens, and a botanical research center. The research center, established in 1927, continues to contribute important work to horticulture. Many of the species that grow on the 1.80 sq km (446 acres) are protected, so be sure to stay on the paved pathways during your self-guided tour. Bicycles are allowed on the roads that weave through the attraction. Narrated tram tours drive visitors throughout the grounds on weekends and holidays for a fee. Watch the site's website for information on outdoor exhibits and educational events.
