Create an itinerary including Ptarmigan Tunnel
The Ptarmigan Tunnel was built in 1930 through the Ptarmigan Wall at an elevation of 7,200 feet (2,200 m) in Glacier National Park, near Many Glacier, in Montana, US. The 250-foot (76 m) manmade tunnel allows hikers to avoid a strenuous climb over very steep terrain between Many Glacier and the Belly River valley. Two opposing steel jackhammers drilling from either side of the tunnel and a series of ten-hole rounds of dynamite gradually broke through the mountain in less than three months.

A wide area, originally for guide and tourist horses, extends from each portal with a masonry retaining wall. Natural rock lines the interior walls. Heavy iron doors were hung across the tunnel adits during the summer of 1975. They remain open from mid-July until October 1, weather permitting. Designed by Ole Westman, this trail tunnel embodies exceptional qualities of landscape architecture and engineering in a pedestrian-scaled tunnel, cut through a sheer mountain wall.

  • We were so sad that the smoke/haze prevented great views. But it was still worth it. 14 miles hike from Many Glacier lodge, shorter if you start at Swift current. Final push past the lake was hard...

  • My girlfriend and I hiked to this tunnel and we loved it. One of the best hikes in Glacier NP. It is a nearly 11-mile round trip. It is a very beautiful path and the end is wonderful. There is an amazing view from both sides of the tunnel. On the way back we saw some grizzly bears which was also very exciting. I highly recommend to take bear spray on this hike.
  • One of the best hikes in Many Glacier Valley, I planned for Iceberg lake but it was closed due to bear activity so decided to go for this one and for sure it was worth hiking. Amazing views throughout and both sides of tunnel. It is not easy especially for the last mile with steep ascend and climb to tunnel and its gets windy as we get elevation Moderate to high difficulty level. Worth the hike up!!!
  • Relatively easy hike up to Iceberg Lake and a more difficult hike up to Ptarmigan Tunnel. Both can accomplished in the same day, and both destinations are very worth the effort!! Iceberg Lake was glacial blue water with actual icebergs floating and breaking apart even into August, surrounded by an imposing cliff wall! There are waterfalls to view along the way, as well as spectacular views towards Swiftcurrebt Pass! Ptarmigan Trail takes you through green pines and flowered meadows, above a blue-tinted lake to what looks like a door to LOTR's Moria. Through the door, passage through the dark tunnel leads to a well-made shelf trail against a much more red landscape, equally epic in depth of features. Stroll down the trail just a bit along the wall, look back, and see a couple-hundred foot waterfall streaming off a high-elevation glacier.. a scene that is hard to beat!!
  • Awesome trail! Will make this a part of future itinerary
  • This is a great hike and destination. The difference between the 2 valleys that the tunnel connects is a big contrast. Even the temperature was much cooler on the far side. Make sure to walk past the tunnel a little ways down to see the valley and more glaciers on the left side.
