Walk into cells through iron-grate doors, see photographs and exhibits of notable prisoners, and take in views of the nearby river from the guard tower of Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park. Now a museum, the territory's first prison was built in 1876 by individuals who became its first inmates. Watch a video presentation to learn about the types of prisoners held here, such as a Mexican revolutionary, a female bandit, and a polygamist. You can walk around the park outside and picnic designated areas. Excellent history lesson! Loved following the placards to learn the history. Gentleman at ticket area in gift shop was engaging, friendly and knowledgeable. The museum had plenty of photos and historical pieces. Fun interactive area to take your mug shot. Nice 360° view from the guard tower. You could visit in an hour but we lingered, saw and read everything at an easy pace. Thank you Yuma for keeping this piece of history restored for travelers like us to enjoy. Fair price for admission.

Very neat piece of history for Yuma. They did a good job of telling the story through exhibits. Definitely worth visiting if you are in the area. Couple of things to note, dogs are not allowed on the premises. Cost is $10 per person unless you are a veteran or Arizona resident. 100% disables veterans get in free. Volunteers are very friendly and helpful. We did the self guided tour and was very informative. Plan to spend about an hour here. Plenty of picnic tables and a restroom on site. Museum and gift shop are available as well. Bringing a group back in March as it is well worth it.

So much history and so much to see. My children ages 10 and 4 enjoyed this place as well. Self guided tour with a brochure and a short video in the museum. A few sensitive topics for smaller kiddos, but we were able to navigate them. Don't forget the cemetery (entrance to that was a small path in the corner of the parking lot). We spent about 1.5 hours here, but you could spend longer if you read each exhibit in the museum.

An interesting thing to see when in the area but Limited appeal with the entire experience taking less than an hour. Might make an interesting date though. This place has some great history and talks about being haunted but I didn't experience anything and the cells are all closed so you don't actually get to experience much. Friendly staff and some great photo backdrops do make this a nice spot for a brief look. For the ghost experience spend some time in The dark cell which is the only cell you can go in.

Very cool historical location. The self guided your was sufficient to understand the details of what is left of the prison. View from the guard tower/overlook was very nice and a great photo op. They have discounts for seniors and veterans.
