Create an itinerary including La Calle de los Suspiros
Roughly translated as the "Street of Sighs," the World Heritage-listed La Calle de los Suspiros provides a glimpse into life during colonial times in Uruguay. Old houses sporting architectural features of centuries ago line the narrow pedestrian street, which allows strollers to feel like they're stepping into another time. Paved with stones and without sidewalks, the street remains linked to many bizarre local myths. One story claims criminals sentenced to death were left here to drown during high tide, while another tale says brothels once dotted the area, attracting lonesome sailors whose love sighs gave the street its whimsical name. • Portugal founded Colonia del Sacramento is 1680 and build this street. Very rough to walk on after 400 years. Note the gutter is in the middle of the street. This is one of the many interesting...

  • Perhaps I should commit to a 2023 travel resolution of utilizing more tour guides when I travel, because I do believe I could’ve gotten more out of this street if I had its history explained to me...

  • This street is small and very charm. The buildings from the period of Portuguese colonization are very conserved and beautiful. All the city is cutie and very historic. See sunset at mar del plata...

  • A painting in real life. Everyone wants to take their photo here or paint their versions of this place. Beautiful street and colors that hold years of history.
  • Beautiful place!
  • Very picturesque place. To learn a little about the history of the colony. Very nice postcard photos can be taken. Recommendation to spend better in the afternoon or at noon, there are not so many people and it is quieter
  • UNESCO heritage. The paving is really curious and for me the most characteristic of the street. The contrast with the color of the walls of the houses and their unevenness, in short, are about 40 meters of a unique piece of street that has been maintained very well over the years.
  • It is very instagrammable you can take beautiful photos as well as in the entire historic center
