Puerta de la Ciudadela
Walk through the only part of the city walls of Montevideo to remain standing at Puerta de la Ciudadela. Once part of the citadel that stood here until 1829 (when, upon Uruguay's independence, it was torn down to make way for the new city), the gate serves as a marker of the city's history and an entrance to the old town. Its attraction has little to do with the architecture, but rather with the history and culture behind it. Once you pass through, you will be in the old part of town, where you can walk the historical streets, peruse local goods, and try the cuisine. Add Puerta de la Ciudadela to your Colonia del Sacramento travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Colonia del Sacramento online driving holiday planner.

A must to take a picture, while visiting the museums. Still in very good condition, so just pose and move on, as there a lots of tourists wanting to take a pic.

Take the photo and enter old town. There are always other visitors to take it for you. Turn left to start your walk. Don't forget to walk along the river.

It is a great place to stop and take a quick picture, and the best place to start walking around the historic area of Colonia Del Sacramento.

We had an awesome time at the hacienda “La Colina” in the wheat fields, we could see the ships going up to the Río de la Plata river from the back porch. Words cannot explain the peace and beauty of nature in that part of the world, also unique flora and fauna. About twenty minutes from the hacienda we visited one of the oldest cities in Uruguay, Colonia del Sacramento. The historic town of Colonia is Patrimonio de la Humanidad, UNESCO. Old faroles, low houses, adoquine streets, singular beauty. The vegetation is full of eucalyptus, sauce llorón, ombu, pines. The story tells of the indigenous people who lived in that area were the Chana/Timbu and also that they were almost exterminated or enslaved by the Europeans. You can notice the Portuguese and Spanish influence in this town. Beautiful handmade crafts for sale, paintings, leather carvings, exquisite jewelry, lots of amethysts. Colonia is surrounded by artisan farms where you can find fresh and delicious products such as dulce de leche, the famous Colonia cheese, as well as several vineyards. Awesome sunsets! Great food! Definitely a unique place where you can live without running. A diamond in South America. Love it!

It was nice to walk around this old town and take in all the views.

Lot of museums work from Friday to Sunday, but okay for two days

One of the main staples of the city, both as a historic landmark and a tranquil place for locals to lounge and enjoy the day. Located near the shore, you’ll get a beautiful view of the river and may even see over to Buenos Aires on a clear day! Try to get there early as this is the starting point for many tours and fills up with people quickly!
