National Heroes Acre or simply Heroes Acre is a burial ground and national monument in Harare, Zimbabwe. The 23-hectare (57-acre) site is situated on a ridge seven kilometres from Harare, towards Norton. Its stated purpose is to commemorate Patriotic Front guerrillas killed during the Rhodesian Bush War, and contemporary Zimbabweans whose dedication or commitment to their country justify their interment at the shrine. Persons buried here are considered heroes by the incumbent Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front regime, which has administered the country since independence at 1980. Indeed, most of the recipients of the 'hero status' were known to be Zanu-PF sympathisers.Using our custom trip planner, Harare attractions like National Heroes Acre can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
The actual monument itself is modeled after two AK-47s lying back-to-back; the graves are meant to resemble their magazines. The monument is an early example of work of the North Korean firm Mansudae Overseas Projects. It closely mirrors the design of the Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery in Taesong-guyŏk, just outside Pyongyang, North Korea.

Lot of history in the museum associated with the independence movement in Zimbabwe. Totally worth a visit and you need about 1.5 hours to see it all. Cost $10/pp adult, international, cash only.

A great place to visit any day of the week, weekend and holiday but do avoid crowds so as to enjoy to the fullest. Close to the main entrance is a mini museum with a number of artifacts to see. The main heroes acre is about 1,5km away and its advisable to drive as the walk though scenic my leave your breathless..literally. the Graves are styled in a way that resembles the magazine of an Ak47. The historical site is suitable for both adults and kids and you do need to carry your id's and entrance fee.

The history here is fascinating, it was a sad place for me to visit but I learned a lot. As a history nerd, I spent the whole night researching and learning more about Zimbabwe's history after visiting Heroes Acre

Experiencing the country history through Heroes Acre was an highlight of my Zimbabwe trip. The place has alot of information on the country fight for independence.

A must-visit site if you are in Harare. If you are touring without a guide you will need to have a good appreciation of Zimbabwean history. Pamphlets or booklets which provide details about the monument are not readily available so unguided tours can be very flat. Worth a visit non-the-less.
