5. The Pinnacles Desert

Contained within the Nambung National Park, The Pinnacles Desert present an eerie landscape of limestone pillars rising from the sand about 100 km (62 mi) north of Perth. Largely unexplored until the 1960s, this area now attracts over 250,000 tourists per year. Recent developments include a visitor center, offering a brief educational lesson about these ancient stones created from seashells in an earlier epoch rich in marine life. Time your visit for early morning or late afternoon, when the play of light brings out the colors of the stones, and the extended shadows of the formations deliver a contrast highlighting their features. Emus and kangaroos, which make their permanent home at this park, are also more likely to be spotted in the early morning hours.
