6. Mammoth Cave, Boranup

Step into a prehistoric world inside of Mammoth Cave. The main chamber is 500 m (1,640 ft) long and lies 30 m (98 ft) below the ground. On your self-guided tour, you'll see fossils of prehistoric animals discovered in the cave. The staff here provide an MP3 player and headphones to deliver information as you explore the ambient-lit caverns. The main chamber is wheelchair-accessible, but the other chambers contain stairs. The long path from the end of the caves back to the reception area passes through a swampy area, so bring insect repellent if you visit in summer.

Lake Cave is renowned for the Suspended Table--a 4,535 kg (10,000 lb) column of calcite that hangs from the ceiling just a tiny bit above the lake. Inside the cave, you will find a tranquil lake that reflects the image of delicate formations, creating the effect of infinity mirror. Descend the 300 steps from the cavern entrance at your own pace and gaze up at towering karri trees and crystal formations.

Witness the artistry of nature in Jewel Cave. On your guided tour of the four expansive chambers, you'll see straw stalactites billed as the longest in any tourist-accessible cave in the world. Thicker stalactites also reach for the floor of the cave, creating the illusion of a melting ceiling. The space inside is relatively open, and the path easy to negotiate. After you emerge from the cave, walk through the stand of towering Karri (eucalyptus) trees surrounding the site. The Preservation Centre here has interpretive information and a cafe. The longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, Busselton Jetty stretches almost 2 km (1.2 mi) into the sea and ends with an underwater observatory. From a depth of 8 m (26 ft) below sea level, you can observe over 300 marine species, including colorful tropical corals and a variety of fish, sponges, and invertebrates swimming right in front of the observatory's 11 viewing windows. Children enjoy the Jetty Train, which seats around 50 visitors. This unusual train trip across the sea offers views of frolicking dolphins and local fishermen snatching their catch. Often described as Australia's greatest artificial reef, this jetty serves up both education and recreation.
