Laze the hours away with a sunny day out to Victoria Park, Charlottetown's largest and most popular park. Opened in 1873, the park has maintained its peaceful natural beauty while providing a hub for recreation and activity for the residents of the town. Ramble through serene woodland trails, scenic harbour front board walks and flourishing gardens, or challenge a friend to a set of tennis before a refreshing dip in the community pool. A splash pad and playground cater for the kids, so bring a picnic and pick a quiet spot.

Step into St. Dunstan's Basilica and admire the marble floors, stained glass windows, and atmosphere of calm and contemplation. An original cathedral on the site burned down in 1907; the replacement you see today dates from 1913. Added to the list of National Historic Sites of Canada in 1990, it displays a Gothic Revival architectural style and represents one of the most prominent buildings in the city. As a local landmark, the basilica attracts both worshippers and those interested in the history and architecture of the town.

Walk along halls where history was made at Province House National Historic Site. Canada's second-oldest seat of government, the building has served as headquarters of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island since its completion in 1847. Note that due to restoration efforts under way you may have to limit your tour to certain areas--check the website before visiting.

Visit the Queen Anne Revival mansion, a National Historic site of Canada. Wandering the picturesque park--a designated Important Bird Area--you might see an array of bird species, as well as raccoons, red foxes, weasels, and beavers. See if you can spot the endangered piping plover skittering along the shore.

A stroll down the tree-lined Victoria Row lets you discover Charlottetown's outdoor music scene. Pedestrianized in the warmer months and appealing to many local musicians, this street features fine 18th-century brick architecture, housing various boutiques and galleries. Choose from many dining options or just take a moment for casual refreshments and people watching from one of the area's alfresco cafes.

Visit Avonlea Village, a rustic village built as a tribute to the books and TV series “Anne of Green Gables”. Opened in 1999, the small village in Cavendish is free to enter and explore. Step back in time and admire replicas of quaint period buildings. Take a pony ride, enjoy a delicious meal, or browse the charming gift shops and artisan stores.
