8. Ranua Zoo, Ranua

Visit Ranua Zoo to see Finland's only polar bears in captivity near the Arctic Circle. The zoo is small because few species can live comfortably in the harsh environment. About 200 arctic animals call the zoo home, including lynx and wolves, and watching them play in the snow is a unique experience. The attraction is open year-round, even when the sun only appears for a couple of hours each day, and in the winter you can take a night safari through the habitats. Book a Ranua Wildlife Safari tour with a local guide to walk you through the habitats and to give you a chance to witness the animals feeding. Water-resistant winter clothing, lunch, a snowmobile ride, and transport to and from your hotel are all included in the safari package.

10. Rovaniemi Church

A landmark of post-World War II architecture, Rovaniemi Church is probably best appreciated from inside. Notice also the 45-key organ with 4,000 pipes. The present brick church with copper roof was built in 1950 in the place of the old wooden one, destroyed in 1944. Walk to the far end of the cemetery and you will find a memorial to Rovaniemi citizens who died in exile during the war.
