Top 15 things to do in Corfu Town

1. Old Fortress Corfu

Taking up a large part of a rocky peninsula renowned for its ocean views, Old Fortress Corfu is linked to the rest of the city by a fixed iron bridge. Visit the impressive site, which sits on the spot once occupied by a Byzantine structure that was largely replaced by the Venetians during the 18th century. Although the fortress rebutted three consecutive Ottoman sieges, it eventually fell under the French rule and joined the Greek territories in 1864. Before you enter, admire the marble statue in front of German general Von Schulenburg, who successfully defended the city from the last siege in 1716.

3. Spianada Square

Enjoy a relaxing walk around maintained gardens, fountains, bridges, sculptures, and monuments at Spianada Square, the largest square in Greece. Situated in front of the Old Fortress, the square is the first thing you see as you approach the historic part of the town. Have your camera ready, for photo opportunities abound--a Neoclassical rotunda at the end of the square makes a good backdrop. Once done with strolling, sit in one of the many cafes and restaurants lining Liston, the town's famous promenade. This is also the only place in the country where cricket matches are played.
